Reflections

Barbary pirates

His lieutenants never liked it.  Housing officers in their cabin on the ship. Only two days, Rais snapped back.  Officers were from a good family.  They always coughed up.  Two days’ inconvenience for a share of the ransom.  His lieutenants shut up.

Not so the scum down below.  Cramped in the darkness below decks.  They’d have to earn their own passage.  Work for their keep.  With the sweat of their backs.
No rich family, no government ‘d buy them back.
